What soft skills really mean — and why they're so hard to train
The problem with soft skills isn't that nobody knows they're important. The problem is that almost nobody knows how to actually train them. A seminar on "resilience" won't make you more resilient. A book on self-motivation might inspire you for three days. And a stress management coaching works great — until the real stress hits.
Why? Because genuine soft skills aren't cognitive abilities. They don't arise from knowledge. They arise from repeated experience under real pressure. Your nervous system needs to learn what your mind has known for a long time. And that requires practice — physical, tangible, sometimes uncomfortable practice.

Exactly where it's needed when a project crashes, a client drops out, or AI reshapes your job.
Becker writes that self-motivation is the decisive meta-competency. The ability to drive yourself forward when no external reward is waiting — when AI takes over the routine tasks and you have to ask yourself: what drives me?
Anyone who does breathing exercises every day for 30 days or steps into a cold shower every morning is training exactly that. Not because someone is watching. Not for a certificate. But because you've learned that overcoming inner resistance is itself the reward. This kind of intrinsic motivation — which nobody can give you from the outside — is exactly what Becker means. And it's trainable. Daily, with your own body.
The Wim Hof breathing technique creates a state in which you consciously let go of control over your breath for a short time. The breath-hold phase — that moment when you sit without air and trust your body — is a deliberate exercise in tolerating loss of control. Nothing feels more uncertain. Emotional intelligence begins with body awareness. Those who can't feel what's happening inside themselves can't develop emotional intelligence — no matter how many books they read about it. At its core, the Wim Hof Method is a practice of body awareness. You learn to read the signals of your nervous system. You notice when stress arises — and when it subsides. That's exactly why the moment when someone sits calmly in the ice bath for the first time — breathing calmly, keeping their eyes open, holding the moment — is one of the most meaningful moments I experience in my work. Because in that moment the person hasn't learned resilience about resilience. They have experienced resilience. Anchored in the body. Wired neurally. That's a difference that changes everything.
Becker writes that personal competence is trainable. He's right. But it can't be trained exclusively in the mind. The autonomic nervous system — the system that governs stress responses, immune reactions, and emotional regulation — doesn't respond to information. It responds to experience. To repetition. To physical practice.
Why AI can't replicate exactly these skills
AI is good at recognizing patterns and processing information. It can write texts, optimize code, generate images, and analyze data — faster and often better than humans. But it can't want. It can't fail and decide to try again anyway. It doesn't have a nervous system that needs to learn how to handle cold. It has no amygdala that needs to be calmed.
