As a certified Wim Hof Instructor, I live the method every day. You're wondering whether WHM can help you lose weight? It's not a miracle cure – but it can support your efforts: it activates your brown adipose tissue (BAT), helps regulate cortisol to counter stress eating, and can gently boost your resting metabolic rate. That said, nutrition remains the main lever.

What do you feel in your body?

When you go into the cold, you force your body to generate heat – your brown adipose tissue (BAT) kicks in and burns extra energy. The contribution to your overall metabolism is real but moderate. The breathing rounds help you regulate cortisol; instead of frustration eating, adrenaline rises, and you often feel lighter and more focused. Many participants report above all greater discipline around eating – and that's exactly where weight loss is decided.

What do the studies say about the Wim Hof Method and weight loss?

Vosselman et al. (2014): Cold exposure increases brown adipose tissue activity and thermogenesis, which slightly raises calorie expenditure. An important caveat: the contribution of brown fat to total energy expenditure is limited in humans – it's a supporting factor in weight loss, not a decisive one.

Ketelhut et al. (2023): This controlled study (15 days of daily WHM) found no significant effects on cardiovascular markers or psychological parameters in healthy participants. So far, there is no solid evidence for a direct weight-loss effect from WHM.

To be honest: There is no study showing that WHM alone makes you slim. What it can realistically deliver: better stress management, reduced triggers for cravings, and motivation toward a healthier lifestyle.

What does a WHM protocol for weight loss look like?

  • Breathing round: 30 deep breaths (belly breathing), exhale fully, hold for 1–2 minutes (3–4 rounds before the cold).
  • Cold: 2-minute ice bath or cold shower – several times a week.
  • Pro tip: Pair it with a calorie deficit and track your progress.

WHM makes you stronger and more resilient – and can help you get the mental side of weight loss under control. Combined with a calorie deficit and good nutrition, it's a valuable piece of the puzzle, but no substitute for either.
